1. The name of your organization:
J.E.M.O.S.
Japanese Earthquake Mitigation Organization for Students
2. Your specific topic: Our specific topic is preventing and/or mitigating Earthquakes in Japan.
3. The purpose- Why are you doing this action?
Earthquakes are one of the most devastating natural disasters in the world. Earthquakes kill as many as 1,000 to 300,000 people every time they strike (over 225,000 is the record set in 2004 during the "Great Indian Earthquake"). An earthquake can also destroy countless homes and offices in it's path. Japan is basically a fault itself, meaning that every year Japan is pummeled with countless earthquakes. J.E.M.O.S. is an organization dedicated to researching a possible solution to predicting when an earthquake will strike, or a way to mitigate the effects of an earthquake.
4. The message- Why should people be informed about this issue?
People should be informed of this issue because earthquakes are one of the most devastating natural disasters in the world. We believe that people should be informed of how to avoid the worst case scenario and how to avoid becoming injured in an earthquake. In the earthquake that shook Kobe, Japan to the ground, magnitude 6.9, there were over 5,500 killed and over 26,000 injured. The earthquake also cost over 200,000,000,000 (2 billion) US dollars. Since Japan is basically a plate boundary by itself, a lot of earthquakes occur there. "Japanese" earthquakes can cause tsunamis in other areas like China, the Philippines, and India.
5.A goal- make sure this is a project that can be done and hopefully continued
Our goal for this project is to inform people the disastrous effects of earthquakes so that people would know what to expect. Also we want to teach people a way to avoid injury during an earthquake.
6. A short-term plan for achieving your goal (keep it simple and don’t be too ambitious- again make sure you CAN actually do this) J.E.M.O.S' short term goal is to raise awareness about what to do during an earthquake and how to help people who have suffered from an earthquake. In order to do this we will establish connections to other schools, as well as our own, so we could start fund-raisers to donate to other organizations, for example NEES, and also to raise awareness of earthquakes in those schools. This does not really make sense to me-
7. A long-term plan for achieving your goal
Our long-term goal is to raise awareness of earthquakes and to teach people what to do in an earthquake.
8.Resources needed for this action plan a. information from NEES (it-support@nees.org )
b. a building company (if possible)
c. both SAS' principals approval of the plan and agree to let us have a "class" about our topic during advisory or other class periods
d. other school's approval (Concordia, BISS, and others) to let us have a "class"
9.Division of responsibilities- who will do what?
